Review: PurePharma D3
Vitamin D is an essential nutrient, and 75% of Americans are deficient. It regulates over 1000 processes in your body and does much more than build strong and healthy bones. Check out our previous article for more information why vitamin D is so crucial. Up for review is PurePharma D3– one of their three available supplements.
Do you need to supplement?
Do all of these apply to you: you are very fair skinned, live near the equator and have an outdoor job? If yes, you probably don’t need to supplement. Do you have an average American lifestyle and/or job? Then you probably should supplement. Are you are a hard charging athlete looking to increase testosterone, reduce inflammation and speed up recovery? Then yes, supplement, absolutely.
A blood test is the easiest way to determine where you’re at and whether you’re in optimal serum vitamin D range. Aim for between 65-75 ng/mL.
Dosage
Many, many vitamin D supplements we have come across vastly under-dose to be. As we highlighted in our article about why you should be taking vitamin D, you probably need to be taking more. PurePharma’s D3 makes it easy and won’t require you to take 100 pills in a sitting. They are already at 2500IU/capsule. See our previous article for recommendations on dosage.
Ingredients
Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin. This means that if you do not ingest it with fat, the supplement will be much less bioavailable. This is why PurePharma packs their Vitamin D with coconut oil. The fat in coconut oil aids your body in utilizing the supplement to reap all possible benefits. I have previously recommended other forms, always pre-emulsified in fat. However, other forms I have recommended have been chalky drops that some patients did not like.
Clinical Results
Since starting to recommend PurePharma D3 to patients I see in my clinic, I have observed major performance improvements. Keep in mind, most of these patients showed insufficient ranges of vitamin D on their blood panels, even though many were supplementing, because the forms they were taking contained low amounts of the vitamine, in non-bioavailable forms. Because PurePharma D3 is mixed with coconut oil, I’ve even heard of a few patients eating them like gummies. Not necessearily recommended, but if that’s your thing, go for it!
Summary
PurePharma D3 is all you need in a vitamin D supplement: dosed high, in a bioavailable form, and pre-mixed with coconut oil for better absorption. It is also fairly cheap compared to other supplements, especially after accounting for dosage.
